Introduction to a future rock climber

Hello!
My name is Matt Borgerding. I am a senior and my major is Health and Exercise Science Pre-Physical Therapy. The coolest thing about my major is that we have to opportunity to dissect cadavers for human anatomy as well as a great deal of very interesting courses that have to do with how the body works as and how to live a healthier life. My best accomplishment last semester was getting an A in physics 2 by 10 points. My favorite movies are Shooter and Hot Rod. I like alt. rock, classic rock, rap, hip-hop, classical and folk rock music. My current goals are to graduate and then apply to Physical Therapy School. My long term goals are to become a successful physical therapist without any students loans. My favorite food is by far pizza. My record is 20 slices at Mazzio's. My favorite thing to cook from scratch is anything in the fridge on a tortilla. If I had a day off I would sleep and then go fishing. My hobbies include hunting, fishing and trail hiking. I have recently got really into indoor rock climbing and slack lining. I also enjoy playing slow pitch softball for my church in the summer time. I like to pass my spare time with a good book or binge watching a TV series. Currently all my spare time is devoted to finishing my application for PT school. The best class I too last semester was Advanced Strength and Conditioning. It was incredibly interesting and very helpful for my future career. I have always been very interested in bio mechanics, aka the physics of the body. I have been working as a tech at a physical therapy outpatient clinic for about 2 years. The picture shown below is of myself at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The picture was taken the day before my sister and I climbed down to the bottom and camped the the river.

  1. I hope you will get good answers to your PT school application, Matt! That is a great profession to go into, where you can put all that detailed knowledge of the human body to good use in helping other people. Maybe for this class you will want to look at the legends of super-strong heroes and superstrength in different cultures: that is a very popular theme in mythology long before medical science began to discover the secrets of biomechanics! There are mythical heroes like Hercules and modern folktale heroes with superstrength like Paul Bunyan. You might want to explore that for the project brainstorming later this week! :-)

  2. Hi Matt, it's great to meet ya! Wow, what are the odds that the randomizer brings you to a blog that you have so much in common with. I am also a health and exercise science major, and you're right, working with cadavers is the coolest part of our major. Maybe we have seen each other around the building before?? As for favorite food, pizza definitely trumps all. Except my record at Mazzio's is 22 (sorry boutcha). That's so cool that you hiked the Grand Canyon to the bottom, that's actually on my list for spring break options this year!

  3. Hi Matt! First of all, you can never go wrong with pizza! Haha. I think your goal of being a successful physical therapist without any student loans is awesome! I am also looking into that goal myself because I’m applying to dental school, and the less student loans the better. Wish me luck. Wow, being a tech for physical therapy sounds like such a good experience before PT school. Good luck with your application!

  4. Hey there, Matt!
I share a similar experience with you from Physics II. I took it during my sophomore year, and I narrowly escaped with an A in the class! That was a stressful semester. I wish you luck in the future while applying to PT school. I am currently applying to dental school, so I know that the whole application process can be stressful. I am a big Dominos guy myself, but Mazzios is always a great choice as well. Your music choice is really cool. You have a lot of different genres that you like, and I appreciate that you are open to many different types of music.

  5. Hey Matt!
Somehow, I will escape undergrad without taking Anatomy Lab. This has always been odd to me, since I am pre-med. The best explanation that I have heard is that medical schools prefer their version of anatomy over the anatomy taken in undergrad. Who knows if there is any truth to that! But I am jealous of all the valuable information that you are probably learning in there.
I love the movie Shooter as well - what a film.
Also, I can't believe that you've camped in the bottom of the Grand Canyon! I bet that was an incredible experience.

  6. Hi Matt! I am a biology Pre-PA major so I also get to take human anatomy. I am so excited to take it, as I love learning about the human body and it will also be cool to have a cadaver for the semester. Congrats on the A in Physics II, I also took it last semester and am so glad it is over! I have also been to the Grand Canyon and am so jealous that you hiked to the bottom, that is definitely on my bucket list. Good luck finishing PT applications!

  7. Hi Matt! I am also a senior and was interested at becoming a physical therapist at one point. I had a good experience with my physical therapist for my knee rehab. However, I do not think I would enjoy dissecting cadavers as much as you do. One of my favorite movies is Hot Rod too because of the memorable quotes and the overall bizarreness of it.

  8. Matt, you look like a very enthusiastic person! It is always inspiring to see people who have centered their life around being healthy. People like you can potentially educate everyone on how to live a better lifestyle. It's nice to hear that you want to go to physical therapy school, because helping others is always an admirable thing to do. I look forward to reading some of your work this semester!

  9. Hi Matt! Wow, sounds like you care a lot about your field of study and you seem like you have a lot of cool, well-rounded interests. I'm highly impressed by your pizza record. I love pizza, but 20 slices would be a lot for me. I love fishing too, but I don't go very often — mostly just with my family when I'm home in Texas. I look forward to reading more from you this semester!

  10. Hello Matt!
Your goals of becoming a physical therapist sound great! I hope you meet your goal without the student loans. Pizza is always the best choice! And of course Mazzios. Hot Rod is such a funny movie and definitely underrated. (Most of my friends don't even know what it is.) That's awesome that you hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon! I've never been, but it's definitely on my bucket list.

  11. Hey, Matt! I'm glad you can enjoy cadaver dissections and what not. I don't think I'd have the stomach for it! I'm not really the best candidate for being a health professional though.
So you went all the way to the bottom of the grand canyon? That's awesome! I was there over the summer, and spent the whole day hiking and only got about 1/4th down before I had to turn around and head back up. Going down is a lot more fun then hiking up, but I'm sure you're well aware of that!

  12. Hi Matt! Congrats on your A in Physics 2, and good luck in the application process to PT schools! Physical therapy seems like a great field to go into, and I think it's great that you're interested in the science side of it and in promoting health. I'm impressed that you actually enjoy cadaver dissections! It does sound fascinating, but I think it would scare me! I really enjoy hiking too, and I'm so jealous that you've been hiking in the Grand Canyon. My parents are retired, and I was envious of them when they went there while I was stuck in school. Pizza is definitely where it's at.

  13. Hi Matt!
Nice to meet you! I can definitely relate to the comment you made about Physics -- that is such an accomplishment! Physics can be hard, but you definitely conquered it. I have a friend who is currently attending PT school, and all I can tell is that she is constantly studying. But, it's all worth it in the end. So, good luck to you in your application cycle!

  14. Hi Matt!
I think it’s so cool that you want to be a physical therapist and that you climbed down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and camped there! I love Mazzio’s pizza specifically their ranch. It’s literally the best ranch I’ve ever had. I was raised on classic rock so its defiantly one of my favorite types of music too. I hope you are having a great semester so far and I look forward to reading your other blog posts!

  15. Hi Matt! That's so cool that you want to be a physical therapist. I have a few friends that are also pursuing degrees in that area and it sounds like such a cool pathway. Good luck with your application to PT school and all your future endeavors! Dissecting the cadavers sounds absolutely fascinating as well. One of my roommates took that course over the summer and she absolutely loved it, especially the lab.

  16. Hey Matt, what an awesome major! Although I do not have to take anatomy, that class sounds really interesting. It's cool to see that you are really passionate about your major and the classes that you get to take. Good luck with your senior year and physical therapy school, and happy blogging!

  17. Hello Matt! I am glad that you enjoy your major and it actually sounds very interesting and fun! I am a pre-med student and for some reason, we are not allow to take physiology or anatomy class and therefore, didn't get to do all the cool dissecting you got to do there! I would spend my free day sleeping in as well (not that I don't do this over the weekend already), but I just love being in bed and bundle up especially now that the weather is getting a bit chillier. Good luck with graduating and on your physical therapy application! And it is nice to meet you.

  18. Hey Matt! Congrats on this being your senior year! I have to take anatomy as well actually. I’m pretty nervous about it. I’ve heard it’s really difficult, but I know it will also be interesting. I’m an indoor person, but I have so much respect for your outdoor hobbies. I tried to do the rock wall climbing at OU’s gym a couple weeks ago and humiliated myself lol. Best of luck to you this semester and with PT school!

  19. Hello, Matt.

It is funny how you consider tearing apart dead human beings as the coolest part of your major. I took a class in high school where all we did was dissections and my favorite part was when we got to visit a cadaver lab. I hope you get into PT school. I have several friends who are on the same track as you, so I know how tough it can be. Good luck.

  20. Hi Matt!
Anatomy sounds very interesting. I also have to take that class for medical school, but I haven't got to it yet. Hopefully I enjoy it as much as you do. Physics II was such a hard class for me! Albeit I hate physics and math all together. PT school was an option for me in the beginning of my college career, but I decided medical school was the path for me. Maybe I might change my mind? Anyways, best of luck to you and getting into PT school.

  21. Hi Matt!

I love Hot Rod too! I think it’s so so funny! One of my really good friends is in HES too, and I think it sounds so interesting! I think it’s so impressive that you have hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon! I bet that was so awesome. I’m looking forward to reading your stories over the rest of the semester!

  22. Hi Matt! Dissecting a human cadaver sounds very interesting indeed! I recently saw the Bodies exhibit at the OKC science museum and it was pretty amazing. It is so cool just what all our bodies can do. I went to the Grand Canyon this summer and I gotta say I now know why its called Grand! That is really awesome that you got to hike down into the canyon and camp with your sister. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  23. Hello Matt! Congratulations on getting an A in physics 2! That is a very hard class, and you must have put forth a lot of dedication and hard work to accomplish that. How long are applications for physical therapy school? Do they take a long time to complete? Your classes sound like a lot of fun; it is good that you are doing something that you enjoy. Have a great week!

  24. Hi Matt!
I have taken several of the HES classes. It is a great major. I loved human anatomy! It was such an incredible experience to see how complex the body really is. Hiking to the bottom of the grand cannon sounds like an incredible experience. I love hiking, but I did not hike the grand cannon while I was there, but I wish I would have. Good luck getting into PT school, and I look forward to reading your stories!

  25. Hello other Matt!

Had to say that since there is 2 of us... I'm older though haha. It looks like you are very passionate about health and strength in general and have decided on a career to focus on that. Great choice. I love pizza as well, Mazzio's not so much. I have a love for camping and the outdoors. The Grand Canyon is amazing. Have you checked out the rock climbing place in Bricktown?

  26. Hello, Matt!
So it blows me away that we are this far in the semester and yet this is my first time reading your introduction. Nice to meet you! So honestly I am impressed with your pizza slice eating record, I am quite the pizza enthusiast but even I can't manage that! I hope your semester is going well so far and I wish you nothing but the best!
