Reading Notes: The Young Beowulf, Reading A

Young Beowulf by Henry Pitz
I was really excited to see a reading section over Beowulf! I have always like his story and had planned on forming my project around him, but I chose to go another direction with my portfolio. This story begins by describing Beowulf at a young age. The author describes him as immensely strong but had very little coordination. The other boys would laugh at him, but were actually very jealous of his strength. They used to call him lazy and slow. So one day, furious that he had not been able to test his full strength, he was challenged to a swimming race and eventually won after a hard swim. Yet still, his peers mocked him. Despite his peers, Beowulf grew up and joined the personal guard of Hygelac due to his immense strength and prowess. However, the same happened among those around  him in the court. Beowulf must prove himself everywhere he goes.

I think that this story will provide fantastic introduction material for my story telling this week, where i can lead into a fight between Beowulf and Grendel. The style of writing in this story flows very well and is fast pace, that is how I plan on structuring my next story. I can open with a background into Beowulf's life and how everything led up to his fight with Grendel.

This story would make a wonderful addition to my portfolio as I have themed I with dark, and scary stories that make the reader feel mysterious reading. I am really looking forward to bringing Beowulf to life in my next story.
