Reading Notes: Sun Wu Kung: The Dragon-King, Reading B
This story is part of the The Monkey King unit. Story source: "The Ape Sun Wu Kung" in The Chinese Fairy Book, ed. by R. Wilhelm and translated by Frederick H. Martens (1921).
The thing that I loved the most about this story was the characters used. The "Dragon-King" is quite possibly the most epic name of a character I've ever heard in my life. It paints the picture of a gargantuan monster of epic proportions that has the ability to level cities. That will be definitely what I will write about in one of my future story. I would love to include a monstrous, powerful character that inspires awe, just by the sound of it's name.
I really enjoyed the idea of combat between different animal "kings." I think that will add some kind of a dual between lions, tigers or bears for some humanitarian cause. I think that this will provide a fun read and an interesting depth that many might not consider at first. It will include similar types of characters where there is conflicts between the "upper class" of different animals over inconsequential issues that the reader will be able to see are not worth the conflict.
I think that I will include more dialogue in my story telling then what appears in this story. I think that more dialogue will add another personal level. This will help humanize the characters and show how the conflict between then is meaningless and necessary. It is always better to learn to work together with those whom you have differences with. I would like to use this story to convey that message, using similar characters.
I think that I will keep with the mysterious setting of my previous stories. For instance, the conflict could take place in a location with a spooky forest with many different types of animals present who do not all get along. This will set the scene for the class struggle inside of the animal species, as well as provide information about the conflict between the different species in the forest. A working title for this forest will be called, the formidable forest.
